Melton Dog Obedience Prep classes are designed to provide a solid foundation for both dogs and their owners, setting the stage for successful training and a harmonious relationship. Here's an overview of what's typically covered in this class:

Class Structure and Content

Group obedience classes 

Basic Commands

The core of any obedience prep class is teaching fundamental commands and hand signals:

  • Sit: One of the first and easiest commands to teach
  • Three Tones of voice: Command, Praise and Correction
  • Heel: Teaching the dog to walk politely beside the owner
  • Stand: A slightly harder command to teach and master
  • Stay: Introducing the basic level of this command Building duration and distance in a stationary position. 

Leash Skills

Proper leash handling is essential for control and safety:

  • Loose-leash walking techniques
  • Proper leash holding and handling
  • Changing directions and pace

Communication and Bonding

Classes focus on improving the connection between dog and owner:

  • Understanding canine body language
  • Effective use of verbal commands and hand signals
  • Building trust and rapport

Behavior Basics

Addressing common behavioral issues and prevention strategies:

  • Jumping on people
  • Excessive barking
  • Basic house manners

Training Techniques

Positive Reinforcement

Most modern classes emphasize reward-based training methods, here at the Melton Dog Obedience club we base our training on verbal reward and praise rather than treat rewards.

  • Proper use and encouragement of praise
  • Timing and consistency in praising desired behaviors

Problem-Solving

Instructors often provide guidance on:

  • Troubleshooting training challenges
  • Adapting techniques for individual dogs

Class Format

Duration and Frequency

Typically, you are in Prep class for 4-5 weeks, with one session per week. After your 4 weeks you will be graduated to Grade 1. 

Hands-On Practice

Classes usually include:

  • Demonstrations by the instructor
  • Guided practice sessions
  • Supervised socialisation

Homework and Continuation

To reinforce learning, classes often include:

  • Daily practice assignments 
  • Short, frequent training sessions at home - approximatley 5 mins per day
  • Progression to more advanced skills

Additional Topics

Equipment Introduction

Prep class cover proper use of training tools:

  • Correction or Matringale Collars 
  • Correct length and type of training leash

Socialization

Many classes incorporate:

  • Controlled interactions with other dogs
  • Exposure to various environments and stimuli
